Last Thursday, December 23, the Allahabad high court stated that if possible, the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, that are expected to be held in February-early March, could be postponed by a couple of months because of the Omicron threat.

The decision to schedule/postpone the UP election will be taken by Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra and Election Commissioners Rajiv Kumar and Anup Chandra Pandey who stoked a controversy by meeting a senior official at the prime minister's office this month, raising questions about the Election Commission of India's independence.
