Union Law and Justice Minister M Veerappa Moily on Thursday welcomed the move by Supreme Court judges to make public the details of their assets.

"If they have come forward to disclose it, it is welcome," he said.

However, Moily said it was for the judges to decide how it should be done. Moily was reacting to the decision taken by apex court judges on Wednesday to declare their assets. "It is for the judges to decide how it should be done because they are the best judge of what is best in their interest," Moily said.

The issue of declaring assets by judicial officers and judges of higher courts has been haunting the judiciary for some time.

"Not that it is new, they were not unwilling, but there are certain things for judges unlike (others as) they are not elected people," he said.

Moily said the government never wanted judges to be embarrassed or inconvenienced.
