An earthquake measuring 5.9 in the Richter Scale rocked the entire north eastern region for a few seconds at around 8.47 on Monday morning.
There was, however, no report of any major damaged due to the earthquake which has its epicenter somewhere in Myanmar, according to initial information received. The quake was felt throughout the region including bordering states of Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal.
According to information received from the regional seismological observation station in Geo-science Department of the Northeast Institute Science and Technology in Jorhat in Assam informed that the epicenter of the quake was on India-Myanmar border to the east of Ukhrul district in Manipur.
It is located at about 95 kilometer depth below the earth's surface. It is located about 322 kilometers away from Guwahati.
The quake caused cracks in many residential houses in Sivasagar district of Assam even as the administration here has deputed a team of experts from Archaeological Department to have a close look as the Ahom Dynasty era monuments in Sivasagar district to detect damages, if any, caused by the quake to those old structures.
