United States First Lady Melania Trump on Sunday, while weighing on immigration crisis taking place at America’s borders, said she “hates to see children separated from their families.”
“Mrs Trump hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform. She believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart,” her communications director, Stephanie Grisham, told CNN on Sunday.
Nearly 2,000 children were taken away from their parents in a six-week period in April and May under the new Trump administration policy.
This comes in the backdrop of a new “zero-tolerance” policy on the border announced by Attorney General Jeff Sessions in April to prosecute immigrants for entering the country illegally, as per media reports.
By virtue of this policy, families who crossed together illegally would in some cases be separated, prompting a sweeping outcry from Democrats and immigration advocates.
Parents have since been arrested and placed in quick federal court proceedings near the border, while children are placed in shelters.
Trump has repeatedly blamed the Democrats for the situation.
“Democrats can fix their forced family breakup at the Border by working with Republicans on new legislation, for a change! This is why we need more Republicans elected in November. Democrats are good at only three things -- high, high crime and obstruction. Sad!” Trump tweeted on Saturday.
