Meghalaya Chief Minister J D Rymbai on Wednesday said that he will resign after taking views of his legislators and coalition partners.

''I have to discuss with them as to whether I should quit or not,'' the chief minister said.

Last night, Rymbai held closed door meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi at 10 Janpath.

Rymbai was directed to step down and hand over the mantle to his predecessor D D Lapang.

Meanwhile, sources close to Congress MLAs supporting Rymbai said the MLAs would urge the beleaguered chief minister to prove his majority in the floor of the House.

Rymbai, who is enjoying the support of the 15 Congress MLAs of the 29 Congress MLAs, was also having the support of the 16 MLAs belonging to four regional parties --United Democratic Party (8), Meghalaya Democratic Party (4), Hill State People's Democratic Party (2) and Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (2).

Opposition party, the Nationalist Congress Party, which has eight MLAs, have extended outside support to the JD Rymbai-led government.
