The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday slapped the stringent Gangsters Act on independent member of legislative assembly Raghuraj Pratap Singh, better known as Raja Bhaiya.
Raja Bhaiya, his cousin and Samajwadi Party Member of Parliament Akshay Pratap Singh and their two aides Hari Om Srivastava and Nanhe Singh have all been charged under the Act.
Raja Bhaiya had earlier been put behind bars during Mayawati's last regime. Since her return to power in May 2007, he maintained a low-profile.
He was arrested and sent to jail along with 12 others on December 19 on a complaint made by some supporters of the Bahujan Samaj Party. The BSP supporters had accused them of attempting to murder a candidate in the ongoing local election in the state.
