A 28-year-old-man has been arrested for allegedly trying to rape the wife of a Russian official when she was swimming in the sea off Chettikulam near Koodankulam in the district.
The police said Bevilya Khovisti (29), a language expert working at the Koodankulam power plant, and his wife were swimming in the sea near their housing quarters last evening when the man, Pauldinm, tried to rape the Russian woman.
However, he fled when the couple raised an alarm.
The man was arrested following a complaint from Bevilya, the police said, adding, he was remanded to judicial custody on Monday.
On August 7, seven people including some college students attempted to rape the daughter of Alexander Cherno, a senior Russian engineer working in the under construction Koodankulam nuclear power plant, when she was swimming in the sea along with her father. The gang snatched their camera also.
In view of the incident, the Koodankulam power plant officials have demanded better security for those staying in the housing quarters at Chettikulam.
