West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced in the assembly on Thursday that retired judge Tapan Mukherjee will be conducting an inquiry into the fire incident.
The government had earlier announced a judicial enquiry into the incident, but had not named the judge.
Describing the fire incident as "shameful" and "shocking," she condoled the deaths and said such incidents could not be tolerated.
Some people had been arrested and stern steps would be taken against other accused, she said.
Compensation of Rs 3 lakh from the state government and Rs 2 lakh from the Centre was being given to the families of each of the deceased, Banerjee said.
She said the Centre had given Rs 1 lakh to those injured in the incident.
