Maharashtra moves SC over dance bars

May 03, 2006 19:41 IST

Maharashtra has filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the Bombay high court order quashing the state government order banning dance bars in the state.

The appeal will come up for hearing on May 10.

The high court in its judgement on April 12 had lifted the ban on dance bars.

The high court had set aside the government order on the grounds it was discriminatory and was therefore violative of Article 14 of the Constitution.

The high court has also taken note of the fact that such dance bars were functioning without hindrances in five star hotels and other high places.

Maharashtra government has challenged the high court order contending that its order was not discriminatory.

Appellant state has also contended that crime rate in Mumbai and other adjoining areas has considerably come down after the closure of these dance bars.

The dance bar girls in large numbers, were rendered jobless following the ban.
