With the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Opposition stalling Parliament's proceedings over the issue of 'tainted' ministers, both the Houses were adjourned for the day without transacting any business.
Giving a stormy start to the Budget session, BJP members in the Lok Sabha rushed to the well of the House right from the word go, demanding that the 'tainted' ministers be dropped immediately.
As Chatterjee pleaded with the Opposition members to raise the issue after question hour, they trooped into the well shouting slogans like 'daagi mantri hatao, desh bachao' (remove tainted ministers, and save the country).
Despite repeated pleas from Chatterjee to return to their seats, they continued to block the proceedings, forcing him to first adjourn the House till noon.
The scene was no different when the House reassembled, and the Speaker adjourned it for the day after 15 minutes of
uproar.
Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee, Leader of the Opposition L K Advani and the ruling United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi watched the turmoil silently.
The listed business included a special discussion on the situation in Iraq, a notice for which had been given by Communist Party of India members P K Vasudevan Nair and Ajoy Chakraborty.
In the Rajya Sabha too, after newly-elected members took oath, the BJP-led Opposition protested against the continuance of 'tainted' ministers in the government and demanded they be dropped.
Following the uproar the chair adjourned the House.
