Nuclear Tango reaches a crescendo
June 28, 2006 16:11 IST

An influential Congress panel on Tuesday passed the United States and India Cooperation Promotion Act of 2006.

As the name suggests it is all about co-operation between the US and India and will clear the way for the Indo-US nuclear agreement signed by President George W Bush and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Though it is seen as a positive for India, the bill authored by Congressmen Henry Hyde and Tom Lantos has its negatives too.

That the US expects India to toe its line regarding Iran's nuclear programme is just one of them.

Naturally the bill has left Indian scientists and critics cold. Even former national security advisor Brajesh Mishra has come out against the deal.

The deal will now have to be cleared by the US Congress.
