First Look: Is Mumbai safe?

August 16, 2005

Naga Students Union took out a protest rally in Mumbai, condemning the brutal attack on two Manipuri girls at the Gateway of India on August 13, 2005.

Leisha Choan and Ngakuim Raony, both from Manipur, were spending time at the Gateway, feeding pigeons at around 6 pm when a young man, identified as Uzer Patel, pounced on them from behind and slit Leisha's throat with a knife.

With the atrocities against women on a steady rise in New Delhi, Mumbai was considered to be the safest metro in India.

But with incidents like the Gateway murder and the rape of a minor inside a police chowki in Marine Drive, is the protestors' question valid?
