The Supreme Court, on Wednesday, left it to the Central Bureau of Investigation to take appropriate action against controversial former Congress MP from Assam, Mani Kumar Subba, whose citizenship has came under a cloud following an inquiry by the agency.
"Let the CBI take appropriate action," a bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan said. The apex court had ordered an inquiry by the CBI on a PIL alleging that Subba was a resident of Nepal and had acquired Indian
citizenship by fraud. The PIL, filed by a Noida resident, Birendra Nath Singh in 2005, had alleged that the then Lok Sabha MP from Tezpur and a lottery baron had come to India after a murder case was registered against him in Nepal in the early 1970s.
Subba had claimed before the apex court that his date of birth was March 16, 1958. He had also claimed that he was born in Dadgram village in Darjeeling district of West Bengal and his parents had migrated from Singtam village in Sikkim.
