Last year, MPs ate subsidised food worth Rs 11 crore!

The Union Ministry of Railways runs a canteen inside Parliament, and provides subsidised food items for elected representatives.

The Union Ministry of Finance has sought Rs 11 crore to be paid to the Railway ministry as subsidy towards running canteens inside the Parliament. There are four canteens inside Parliament run by the Railway ministry.

They sell food at subsidised rates at the Central Hall Parliament Library, Parliament Annexe, and the main reception of Parliament main reception.

Two pieces of Idlis with two vadas, a plate of upma and coffee costs Rs 8, whereas the actual cost comes to around Rs 28.

By that calculation, the MPs ate subsidised food worth Rs 11 crore in the year 2009-2010.
