Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo Lalu Prasad called up Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday night and sought his immediate intervention to get the Maharashtra government's decision -- on giving licence to those who are domicile of that state for the last 15 years -- rescinded.
"I spoke to the prime minister over telephone late on Thursday evening and requested him to get the Maharashtra cabinet decision rescinded as it is not good for the country's unity and integrity," said the former chief minister of Bihar.
Lalu added that Dr Singh had assured him of doing the needful in this connection.
Majority of the taxi drivers in Mumbai are migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
The Maharashtra government's decision is an attack on the federal structure of the Constitution and will have far reaching repercussions on other states, Prasad told Dr Singh.
The Constitution grants every citizen of the country the right to move and settle in any part of the country in search of job, he added.
