The Karnataka high court on Thursday expressed concern over the death of three month-old baby Afreen, who was abused and battered to death by her father for being born a girl.
The court's observations came while it was hearing a Public Interest Litigation on child malnutrition in the state.
The division bench headed by Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen expressed concern over the death of the baby on Wednesday and sought to know if any legal aid had been given to its mother Reshma. The government advocate said the state was ready to give free legal aid to Reshma.
Afreen died of cardiac arrest on Wednesday at the Vani Vilas Hospital, where she was admitted in an intensive care unit on Sunday, after suffering cardiac arrest due to convulsions and bleeding. She was on life-support systems and in a semi-comatose state.
