Kerala Congress-Jacob faction leader T M Jacob on Thursday created a flutter when he displayed a grenade in the state assembly and claimed it was one of the explosives used by the police against National Congress-Indira youth wing workers during a protest march.

Jacob, seeking permission of the House for an adjournment motion on the 'brutal' police action on NCI activists who marched to the assembly on Wednesday, displayed an unexploded grenade during his speech.

Shibu Baby John of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (Bolshevik) brought the grenade in a packet and handed it over to Jacob.

The action triggered an uproar in the House with the ruling benches rising to flay Jacob's action.

Speaker Therambil Ramakrishnan said there were clear rules prohibiting members from bringing such objects to the assembly. "An experienced legislator like Jacob should not have done this," the speaker said and asked him to take the grenade out of the House.

However, the uproar continued as Communist Party of India-Marxist deputy leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan took the grenade from Jacob's table and showed it to his collegaues who gathered around him.

As the din continued, the Speaker again rose and 'insisted' that the object be taken out of the House. Then, Shibu Baby John took it and went out.
