Kasab's sentencing postponed to Thursday

A special anti-terror court in Mumbai on Tuesday reserved the decision on the quantum of punishment to be awarded to Ajmal Kasab, the lone terrorist arrested during the terror siege on the city in November 2008 that claimed 166 lives, for Thursday.

The court will announce Kasab's punishment on May 6 at 12.30 pm. 

Judge M L Tahiliyani decided to defer the decision on the quantum of punishment as his stenographer in the trial was delayed.

The judge heard the arguments by Kasab's lawyer K P Pawar and Special Public Prosecutor Ujwal Nikam today.

In his argument in the court, Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam had said that anything less than death would be injustice to the hundreds who died in the attacks.

Kasab, who hails from Faridkot in Pakistan, was on Monday found guilty of waging war against India, of killing innocent people and abetting murder at other scenes of the attacks where his accomplices perpetrated mass killing.

Kasab was held guilty under provisions of Arms Act, Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, Explosives Act, Railway Act and other laws

On the night of November 26, 2008, Kasab had been captured alive from the Girgaum-Chowpatty police barricade, following an encounter with the police, in which his accomplice was killed.

The duo had earlier killed several people at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, in and outside Cama Hospital and Metro Junction.
