After undergoing a non-invasive treatment for his fractured right shoulder bone, President A P J Abdul Kalam was on Tuesday discharged from the hospital.

He returned to the Rashtrapati Bhavan from the Army's Research and Referral Hospital.

"His Excellency has shown a very good recovery. He is in fine health," Hospital Commandant Maj Gen L P Sadhotra told reporters.

Kalam had sustained the fracture on Sunday. On Monday, he underwent a corrective procedure called 'closed reduction'.

"His right shoulder has been immobilised for the time being for proper healing," Sadhotra said. Later, the President will be under physiotherapy.

Before leaving the hospital, Kalam visited its experimental laboratory where a demonstration on mannequins was shown to him, the Commandant said.

He also interacted with hospital staff and a few children who happened to be at the reception, he added.

Kalam would not require bed rest and could return to 'normal work immediately', Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesman S M Khan said.

But the President was unlikely to leave the capital for at least a week and the programmes in New Delhi that he was supposed to attend, including the governors' conference, would be rescheduled, Khan added.
