President A P J Abdul Kalam, who had suffered a shoulder bone fracture on Sunday, underwent a non-invasive corrective procedure on Monday and his condition is said to be fine.

"Today [Monday] morning, under short general anaesthesia, closed reduction of the fracture was done," Maj Gen L P Sadhotra, Commandant of the Army Hospital, Research and Referral, said. The President had an uneventful recovery and his condition is fine, he said.

A closed reduction of a fracture is a procedure in which the doctor sets a broken bone without making an incision in the skin.

The President slipped during his morning walk on the Rashtrapati Bhavan premises and sustained a fracture of the neck of humerus (shoulder bone). He was admitted to the army hospital later in the day. It was decided to conduct a surgery on him.

But on Monday morning top doctors decided instead to treat the fracture without an invasive procedure.

"This procedure is sufficient now," Sadhotra said.

Tomorrow [Tuesday] the doctors will again examine Kalam to decide on when he can be discharged and how much rest he will need, the Commandant said.

Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson S M Khan said the President spoke to his elder brother in Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu on Sunday evening.
