President A P J Abdul Kalam will address the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly sometime next month. It will be the first address ever by a President to a state assembly.

The initiative came from Kalam himself when the newly-elected AP Assembly Speaker K R Suresh Reddy called on him at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday.

"During the course of our interaction, the President expressed his keenness to address the state assembly and interact with the newly-elected legislators. I am thrilled at this unique gesture," Reddy told PTI.

The schedule will be worked out with the President's office, he said adding "it will be our honour to convene a special session of the assembly, if necessary, to have the President in our midst with his message."

According to official sources, the unique event might materialise in the second week of July when Kalam is scheduled
to visit the city to participate in a programme at the University of Hyderabad.

The budget session of the AP assembly will commence on June 21 and will continue till the end of next month.

Reddy said he would soon write to the President formally inviting him to address the assembly. "We keenly look forward to his address and interaction with our MLAs. He is a visionary and a great scientist and I am sure he will have
good ideas for legislators and there cannot be a better forum than assembly to share these ideas," the speaker said.
