Fashion designer Anand Jon Alexander, who was arrested on March 6 on charges of rape, was granted bail by a court in Los Angeles County on Monday evening.

"An immigration judge has discharged the immigration detainer (hold) that was placed improperly on him," his criminal attorney Ronald Richards told rediff.com.

Jon, who resides in Los Angeles, was charged last month with multiple counts of sex-related crimes. Richards retained Jaehoh Suh to represent Jon in connection with the immigration detainer. However, immigration authorities put a hold on the release of Jon as he was on a business visa.

"Suh was fully prepared to argue bond and instead obtained a termination of the proceedings. The government was successfully convinced to terminate all immigration proceedings and Jon was released from custody at approximately 8:30 pm (Pacific Time) on Monday," Richards said.

Jon will be appearing in person in Los Angeles Superior Court in Beverly Hills on April 4 for arraignment.

Jon's mother Shashi thanked those who stood behind the fashion designer during the difficult hour. She was bitter that some news media vilified the designer with all kinds of allegations.

"It was God's grace that we could bring him out. He is very tired," she said.

The attorney did not reveal details of posting the bail. The court had set $1.365 million as bail amount.
