J&K: Azad invited to form new government

October 31, 2005 14:37 IST

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Lt Gen (Retd) S K Sinha on Monday invited Congress Legislature Party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad to form the new government in the state.

A Raj Bhavan spokesman said Sinha had extended the invitation to Azad after scrutinising the letters of support by coalition partners to the new Congress-led regime.

The Governor is fully satisfied about the support enjoyed by Azad in the legislative assembly, he added.

Azad will be sworn-in as the new chief minister of the state on November two at 05:00 PM at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Complex in Srinagar.

Azad had, on Sunday, called on the Governor to stake claim to form the new government in Jammu and Kashmir, replacing Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as the chief minister.

Soon after being elected as the CLP leader, Azad, armed with the letters of support from the coalition partners -- the Peoples Democratic Party, the Peoples Democratic Forum, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and others -- met the Governor at the Raj Bhavan.

Sinha had said that he would announce his decision after examining the papers within 24 hours.
