J&K: Terrorists attack Sopore, 9 injured

Nine people were injured in a string of terror attacks in north Kashmir's Sopore town on Monday.

A senior police officer said terrorists fired rifle grenades and resorted to firing in Sopore, 54 km from Srinagar.

Six employees of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited were injured when a rifle grenade exploded in the premises of the BSNL main exchange in Iqbal Nagar area of Sopore.

The injured employees were immediately shifted to hospital for treatment.

The complex in the heart of Sopore town also houses the office of the Sopore district police chief and a police camp.

The terrorists also fired three rifle grenades at an army camp in the town, two of which exploded without causing any damage. One unexploded grenade was later defused.

Minutes later, terrorists attacked a police party in the main chowk. They hurled grenades and opened fire injuring two policemen and a special police officer, who were taken to a nearby hospital.

The explosions and the gunfire triggered panic and tension in the town where shops, businesses, educational institutions were already shut because of the strike called by the separatists.

Troops of counter insurgency Rashtriya Rifles and special operations group of the police have surrounded some localities in the town and are conducting searches for terrorits.
