The Jammu and Kashmir police has constituted a three-member special team to investigate the alleged rape and murder of 17-year old Asiya Jan and her 22-year old sister-in-law Neelofar Jan in Shopian.

The May 30 incident has had the entire valley on the boil for over a week, paralyzing life in the state.

The week-long violent protests and clashes claimed one life and left over 300 wounded.

The special investigation team (SIT), constituted by state director general of police Kuldeep Khuda, would be headed by a superintendent of police.

"The team will comprise Shah-ud-Din Malik, as incharge of the team, deputy superintendent of police, Mushtaq Ahmad Shah and Najeeb Hussain Nehvi, senior prosecuting officer, crime branch Kashmir as its members," the police said in a statement.

The SIT has been authorised to co-opt any other police officers as its members for the process of investigation, the statement said.

"This team shall investigate the case under the supervision of deputy inspector general of police south Kashmir range," it said.

The judicial enquiry headed by a retired high court judge will also begin its proceedings in Shopian from today.
