The Jammu and Kashmir police have arrested four persons, including a former militant, involved in the stone pelting incident in north Kashmir Baramulla town, 54 kms from Srinagar, that resulted in the death of an 11- day old baby.

The death of Irfan Ahmad had caused widespread indignation in the state when the mother Kulsooma said that the public vehicle they were traveling in was attacked by a group of stone pelters.

The parents were carrying sick Irfan to Baramulla for treatment on Monday last, when the tragic incident happened.

The baby slipped out of the mothers lap in the melee and died on the spot. The other son of the couple was also injured in the pelting.

The police had registered a case of murder in the incident and launched a manhunt to trace the vehicle in which the stone pelters were traveling on February 22.

"We have arrested the kingpin and three others involved in the incident. We will soon produce a challan in the court in the case," a police officer in Srinagar said.

The state government had assured the in-session state assembly that the culprits would be traced soon and booked for the murder of the baby.
