Exchange of heavy fire between holed-up militants and security forces in the forest area of Chattergul in north Kashmir Ganderbal district continued for the second day on Sunday.

A senior police officer confirmed two militants including a foreigner have been killed in the 36-hour long gunfight, which erupted after troops of counter insurgency Rashtriya Rifles and the police surrounded the forest area on specific information about the presence of a group of militants on Saturday morning.

"Firing
exchanges are continuing in the forest area which is under a tight cordon," the officer said.

Authorities have rushed more reinforcements to the area to further strengthen the cordon.

Security forces had gunned down a foreign militant on Saturday and on Sunday evening another militant was gunned down by the surrounding security forces.

"Searches are also continuing in the area," the officer added. He also said that all the escape routes have been plugged.
