The Delhi high court has awarded life imprisonment to Manu Sharma for murdering model Jessica Lal in a Delhi restaurant on the night of April 29-30, 1999.

Justice R S Sodhi and Justice P K Bhasin heard the two sides' arguments on the quantum of punishment in the morning.

R J Nasim appeared for Manu Sharma while Mukta Gupta appeared for the prosecution and sought the capital punishment. The two judges felt that though the crime was shocking to society, it cannot be said that Manu Sharma cannot reform himself, and hence awarded him life imprisonment.

Manu Sharma has also been asked to pay a fine of Rs 50,000 to the victim's family next month.

The two other convicts in the case, Vikas Yadav and Amardeep Singh Gill, have been given four years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 4,000 each for their role in the conspiracy. The court also dismissed Gill's application without hearing his arguments.
