51 injured in clashes at Rajouri university

Fifty-one people, including 46 students and five policemen, were injured in clashes between the police and university students in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, police officials said.

Students of Baba Gulam Shah Badshah University, who were protesting against the mass failures in under-graduate examination allegedly due to 80 percent of out of syllabus in question papers, tried to gatecrash into campus were stopped by the police in Rajouri, 180 km from Jammu, they said.

The students clashed with police, which resorted to cane charge, they said adding in the clashes 46 students and five cops were injured and were hospitalised.

After dispersal from the spot, the students sat on dharna on Sheri-e-Kashmir bridge in the town and blocked the traffic, they said there was also clashes.

On the intervention of district administration, students had a meeting with Deputy Commissioner, Rajouri and Senior Superintendent of Police at Gujjar Mandi areas but it failed and protest demonstrations continued.

The students later continued their strike and protest demonstration amid hunger strike at University campus, when reports last came in from the area, they said.

They are demanding grace marks in examination in which over 80 percent of questions were out of syllabus, reforms in evaluation system, provision of supplimentary examination and transperancy in examination.

Commenting on the issue, Registrar of University, Abdul Rashid said that University authorities have already agreed to most of their demands, including provision for supplementary examination and re-evalution.
