Jama Masjid to be developed at a cost of Rs 94 cr

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Tuesday informed the Delhi High Court that a re-development plan costing a whooping Rs 94 crore has been formulated for developing the historic Jama Masjid in the capital.

Among other things the ambitious plan involves introduction of a mono Railway system or tram services to ferry people around the developed area.

According to the affidavit filed before the High Court under the proposed re-development plan it was proposed to spend Rs 60 crore for establishing a multi-level under ground car parking lot at the parade ground and another multi level under ground car parking at Netaji Subhash Marg.

About Rs 8.14 crore would be spent on re-development of surrounding open spaces like Meena Bazar falling under the area of the Delhi Development Authority.

An amount of Rs 6.30 crore would be spent for development of peripheral road around the Jama Masjid from Netaji Subhash Marg at Nukkad Faiz Bazar culminating at the Parade Ground.

Over Rs 19 crore would be spent on developing the Netaji Subhash Marg corridor stretching from Lothian Bridge towards the footover bridge at Daryagunj.

The affidavit has been filed according to the court directions to the government for developing the Jama Masjid and restore it to its pristine glory.

A Division Bench of Justice Vijender Jain and Justice Rekha Sharma had earlier issued the directions on a public interest litigation which complained that the historical monuments was in literal shambles and under unauthorised occupation.

The court has been periodically monitoring the re-development plan by involving the officials of the Archaeolgoical Department, DDA, MCD and the Delhi government.
