Former Kurdish rebel fighter Jalal Talabani has been elected the president of Iraq. The countrys new 275-member parliament also chose Shiite Islamist Adel Abdel Mahdi and outgoing Sunni president Ghazi al-Yawar as Talabanis deputies.
