Allowing students to have interaction with Rahul Gandhi has cost vice chancellor of a leading university in Indore his job.

Devi Ahilyabai Vishwa Vidyalaya (DAVV) vice chancellor Dr A S Sehrawat, who ran into a controversy after allowing Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi to interact with students on the university campus has resigned from his post.

Sehrawat sent his resignation to the Governor and Chancellor of the University Rameshwar Thakur.

"The atmosphere in the university is not peaceful and not to my liking. So, I have resigned from the post," Sehrawat told PTI today.

The Governor has accepted Sehrawat's resignation and appointed Rector Ashutosh Mishra as an acting vice chancellor.

Sehrawat is a chartered accountant by profession and had taken charge of the university on June 2, 2009.

BJP's student wing Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had protested Sehrawat's decision to allow Rahul on January 19 this year to hold interaction with students and alleged that he politicised the campus in favour of the Congress Party.

Later, the state government issued a notice to him asking for explanation, sources said.

The state government had indicated that it might impose Section 52 of the Madhya Pradesh Universities Act of 1973 on the DAVV to remove him from the post, but he chose to quit before that, sources added.
