The kidnapping, illegal confinement and rape of a college girl for 17 months is threatening to blow up in to a major issue in Hyderabad. The family of the hapless victim has been running form pillar to post for justice and stringent action against the perpetrator.

The incident came to light almost a fortnight ago when the girl managed to flee from her tormentor. Her family reported the matter to the police but not all the guilty, including three policemen, have been brought to book.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, South Zone, Tarun Joshi has said that a case has been booked against the accused Satyaprakash Singh under Nirbhay Act and has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody. But there has been no indication that the police was taking the case as seriously as it deserves.

The girl is a student of a private polytechnic college and the kidnapper the owner of the canteen in the same college. On April 3, 2012, Satyaprakash Singh drugged and kidnapped her from the college and kept her under captivity for 17 months, tortured and raped her.

She told the police that Satyaprakash Singh’s family was fully aware of his crimes and helped him but the police have not taken any action. She has named Satyaprakash’s father Bhishmukh Prakash Singh (retired defence employee), his brother M Jayparakash Singh, an advocate and his wife in this connection.

In another shocking revelation, the 20-year-old girl said that on one occasion, hearing her shouts for help the people in the neighborhood had alerted the police. Three policemen who came along with Satyaprakash, instead of rescuing her, raped her.

The girl also told the police that Satyaprakash had impregnated her and forced to undergo abortion at a local hospital. All the while he threatened to kill her and said that he had done the same thing to four other Muslim girls.

Though some small protests have taken place outside the Santoshnagar police station in old city where the case was booked, and in Kukatpally area, the city has not seen any sense of outrage seen after the gang rape in New Delhi earlier this year.

On a complaint from the family of the girl and Majlis Bachao Tehreek leader Amjadullah Khan, the Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the Director General of Police V Dinesh Reddy and Hyderabad collector for their reports by October 7.
