'He conducted journalism with honesty, integrity'

June 11, 2011

J Dey, a senior investigative journalist who extensively covered underworld and crime for over two decades, was shot dead in broad daylight on Saturday.

He was working as the editor (special investigation) with English tabloid Mid-Day.

In a statement, the tabloid expressed its shock and outrage over the incident.

First and foremost, our condolences go out to Mr Dey's family. We are with them in their hour of grief and MiD DAY will support the family in every manner possible.

Mr Dey was one of the pillars of the MiD DAY newsroom for the last four years, and as one of the senior-most investigative journalists in the country, was an invaluable asset to the newspaper. He brought depth to our investigative reporting, and he conducted his journalism with honesty and integrity.

This is not only a loss to MiD DAY, but to the media fraternity in general.

Mr Dey had been a crime reporter for more than two decades, and over the course of his illustrious career, was a mentor and a "guru" to budding crime reporters. His loss to journalism, therefore, is irreparable.

MiD DAY will not speculate on the circumstances that led to his murder, and will cooperate with the Mumbai Police at every step in the investigation.

MiD DAY is a fiercely independent newspaper, and will remain so, despite this massive loss. We will not stop doing investigating stories, and we will not bow to criminals.
