India to become member of Hague Conference

India on Thursday decided to become a member of the Hague Conference on Private International Law.

The Hague Conference on private International Law is an inter-governmental organization, the main objective of which is to work for progressive unification of the rules of private international law, Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunshi told reporters after the meeting of the Union Cabinet which approved the decision.

The Conference finds internationally agreed approaches to issues such a jurisdiction of courts, applicable law, matters relating to child protection, marriage and personal issues and enforcement of judgments in a wide range of areas, he said.

At present it has 65 member states and the membership would entitle India to participate in all meetings and conferences, said the Minister.
