Congress leader and former Union minister Buta Singh and former Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson Pratibha Patil were on Tuesday appointed governors of Bihar and Rajasthan respectively.

Singh, 70, who lost the last Lok Sabha election from Jalore in Rajasthan, will replace M Rama Jois in Bihar and the Congress leader from Maharashtra, who is also 70, will succeed Madan Lal Khurana, who resigned to return to active politics.

The appointments will take effect from the date they assume charge, a Rashtrapati Bhavan announcement said.

Jois resigned after a 16-month term often marked by frequent standoffs between him and the Rabri Devi ministry.

The previous National Democratic Alliance government had appointed both Jois and Khurana, who quit their offices last week.
