Terming the Gujarat government's anti-conversion bill as divisive, the Congress has demanded its immediate withdrawal.

The Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party government has misused religion for narrow political gains, Sudhakar Reddy, secretary of the state unit of the Congress alleged.

As per Supreme Court orders, under the Indian Minority Act and National Commission for Minority Act, Jainism and Buddhism were independent religions.

The recent amendment bill was against the Constitution, Reddy said.

One's religious faith is a private affair, and the government had no business to make laws on it, he said.

"Why did the Modi government not give enough time for thorough discussion in the House?" he asked.

"This is a mischievous and divisive move and should be immediately withdrawn", Reddy said.

The Gujarat Freedom of Religion (amendment) Bill 2006 was passed in Gujarat Assembly recently.
