Prohibitory orders were issued throughout Radhanpur town in Gujarat's Patan district, after three persons, including a Home Guard, were killed on Tuesday. The deaths occured when police opened fire at a stone-pelting mob during a demolition drive to remove flood waters, officials said.

Three others are reported to be injured but it is unclear if they received injuries in stone pelting or police firing.

The Home Guard was killed when he accidentally received a bullet injury, which was fired by the police at the mob.

Senior officials rushed to Radhanpur, following the incident and have imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code so that people do not gather and create any more trouble after stone pelting, officials said.

Among the victims included two persons of minority community and one of majority community, police said.

"The incident occurred when officials of the town administration went to remove excess flood waters by breaking some walls, including that of a grave yard at Mira Road. This had to be removed in order for the flood water to recede. However, some locals of the area obstructed to this and began pelting stones," Patan district Superintendent of police B D Vaghela told PTI.

Vaghela said that the State Reserve Police personnel at the spot opened fire when the stone pelting began and killed three persons on the spot.

The victims were identified as Abdul Ghanchi (28) and Rizwana Ghanchi (25) and the Home Guard was Madan Makwana.

He added that the situation was tense but under control at present and patrolling had been increased to prevent any further trouble.
