In a case of suspected honour killing, a newly-married woman Anupam Devi was allegedly burnt alive by her family members for marrying a relative against their wishes, police officials said on Thursday.

Anupam body was recovered from the Sindhiyan village under Murliganj police station in Madhepura district of Bihar.

Anupam's court marriage with her lover Mukesh Kumar had been strongly opposed by her father Virendra Yadav and other family members who termed it as 'against the family tradition'.

"Anupam's family, particularly her father, was against her love affair with Mukesh but after she eloped and married, they eliminated her," a police official said.

Madhepura Deputy Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar told rediff.com that preliminary investigations suggested it was a case of honour killing.

Police have arrested a relative of Anupam after her husband lodged a complaint against 15 people, including her father. All other accused are absconding.

According to FIR lodged by Mukesh, Anupam's family members stormed into their house on late Tuesday night, dragged her out and set her on fire.
