The Delhi police on Saturday detained Professor S A R Geelani in the wake of the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru at Tihar Jail.

Geelani had been arrested in connection to the Parliament attack but he was later acquitted by the court.

When contacted, Geelani, speaking from the police vehicle, said, "The police do not want me to be out at this moment".

The police have claimed that this is merely a preventive measure based on the directives of the alert sounded by the Intelligence Bureau.

The IB had warned of trouble in various parts of the country following the hanging. The police did not want Geelani or others speaking on the issue as they feared that their statements could foment trouble.

The police are also monitoring the movements of Guru’s family members.

Geelani said that he had spoken to Guru’s shaken family members.

The Centre has asserted that it had informed Guru’s family members about his execution but they have claimed that they received no such information.
