Discovering Ganesh to help India's poor see better
June 12, 2008 19:29 IST

In a novel attempt to help reduce poverty and generate opportunity for the rural poor in India, a fund-raising event will be organised in New York city on June 26.

The event, being organised by 'Discovering Ganesh' -- a contemporary multi-faced project created by New York-based photographer Shana Dressler out of her passion for India and the Lord Ganesh, seeks to create a collaborative effort to remove obstacles in the lives of the poor in India.

The proceeds of the fund-raising event -- to be held at the East West Living in New York -- will go to the Scojo Foundation, which has been striving to save thousands of rural Indians from the debilitating, poverty-inducing effects of sight loss.

The funds will be utilised to purchase affordable reading glasses. According to the Scojo website, reading glasses are one of the simplest, most affordable tools that can be provided to make a huge and immediate impact on peoples' lives.

The fund-raiser will have a musical performance by Indian songstress Falu and a digital exhibition of photos from Ganesh festival in Mumbai.
