The United States and Russia on Tuesday began a two-day missile defence war games to prepare themselves to protect vital installations in a third country in the course of future international operations.

According to the Russian Defence Ministry, the fourth Central Research Institute of the Ministry in Moscow is hosting the joint theatre-wide ballistic missile defence command-post exercise.

"The exercise is focused on crafting co-ordination techniques for use by non-strategic air defence in providing BMD coverageªto a third country during a coalition operation under the aegis of international organisations," a Russian defence ministry release said.

The current exercise is the fourth in the series of theatre-wide BMD CPXs, launched in 1996. Two previous exercises were conducted in the US and one in Russia.

"The theatre-wide BMD exercise programme is designed to further promote the Russian-US cooperation aimed at building trust and bolstering the positive relations between the two militaries," the release said.
