Strike! Eiffel Tower closed

September 15, 2004

France's most famous landmark, the Eiffel Tower, has been closed to tourists since Tuesday evening due to a strike by employees.

About 250 people work in the tower and a majority of them has joined the strike, UK's Guardian newspaper reports on its website. Other details about the strike are not known.

The 324-metre wrought iron tower was built to commemorate the French Revolution. It was opened to the public in 1889 and receives over 10,000 tourists every day.
