Violence erupted in Azamgarh district in Uttar Pradesh after former Member of Legislative Assembly and Bahujan Samaj Party leader Sarvesh Singh Seepu and another person was shot dead by unidentified assailants.
Seepu, 35, was shot dead on Friday morning while he was returning from the police station in Chiku locality after pursuing a case, police said, adding Seepu and another person died on the spot.
He was a Samajwadi Party MLA from Sagari seat till 2012. He then joined the BSP and had contested the last assembly elections on BSP ticket from Sadar seat.
Following the incident, angry locals thronged the police station, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. The locals also pelted stones on the police station.
Police personnel have been rushed to the spot to control the situation, where a large number of people have gathered.
