7 killed in fresh violence in Assam

Seven more people were killed on Saturday in fresh and separate incidents of violence, one in Chirang in the Bodoland Territorial Council area and another in Dhemaji district, Assam. The fresh killings have taken the toll up to 94 in the spell of violence that erupted on July 21.

Indefinite curfew has been imposed in the Chirang district on Saturday evening following the murder of five persons. The five persons were killed and their bodies recovered at around 5:30 pm near Choudhurypara village in Chirang the district while the other two bodies were found near the Nalbari village in the Dhemaji district in eastern Assam.

A senior police official said in both the incidents the culprits belonged to the Bodo community. Four persons were arrested in connection with Dhemaji murder incident, all of whom had returned from Karnataka two weeks ago following threats and rumours.

The deceased were going to take a ferry ride to cross Brahmaputra River when they had a quarrel with the culprits. The bodies were recovered from a marshy land.

The five persons who were killed in Chirang had gone out of a relief camp under Amguri outpost without informing the camp in-charge. They were travelling in a Tata Mobile vehicle.
