An eight-year-old boy died when a palm-sized fish slipped out of his hands and leapt into his mouth, choking the child to death.

Samium Ahmad was playing with the freshwater fish, which he had scooped out of his neighbour's concrete pond in a Malaysian village, when it slipped out of his hands and leapt into his mouth, local media reported.

When the boy started choking, his mother tried to pull the 7x4 cm fish out of his mouth but it was very firmly lodged and could not be removed, she later said.

The child was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, the reports added.
