Families of stranded Indians (mainly from Punjab) in conflict hit Iraq staged a dharna at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Tuesday, demanding the central government’s intervention for their release.

The Aam Aadmi Party has taken up the issue with national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and 4 Lok Sabha MPs of the party meeting the families on Tuesday afternoon.

At least 3,000 Indians are still stranded in armed conflict hit Iraq and there is still no word on the plight of 39 workers abducted by the ISIS, who have now spent more than five weeks in custody.   

MP Bhagwant Mann accompanied the family members to meet senior officials in the external affairs ministry.

There’s tension building up over the issue and the AAP is likely to force the government in making a statement in Parliament.
