The explosives were found by the police when they were checking vehicles on the National Highway in Varanasi.
The car was coming in from Allahabad and when the driver saw the police checking vehicles, he abandoned the vehicle, parked it in a side lane and fled.
When the police saw the man fleeing, they checked the vehicle and discovered the explosives.
No one has been arrested so far and the police are trying to trace the car's owner and driver.
The law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh is already surcharged after the recent rape and murder cases. The discovery of explosives in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha constituency may be an attempt, police soruces feel, to disrupt law and order in the state.
