Over 200 girls staged a peaceful protest on Saturday by giving roses to Delhi University Vice Chancellor Deepak Pental .
According to the girls, no action is taken against the cases of molestation and eve teasing on the campus. The students said that the maximum number of eve teasing incidents take place during the police recruitment examination, which are held in the university campus.
Pental assured the girls that they will be able to study in a safe environment. She added that the police recruitment exams will no longer be held at the university.
The girls pointed out that the boys continued to harass them without any fear of the consequences because the police took their own sweet time to register complaints.
Officers at the helpline desk say that at least 8 of the 10 calls they receive from students comes from the north campus, which comprises students from other states.
However, students feel that these help lines are useless. The police need to have mobile patrolling teams across the campus to monitor the situation, says Radhika, a student from the Indraprastha College.
Students add that it is considered extremely unsafe to walk anywhere in the north campus in the evening. Recently, a group of boys tried to drag a girl inside a van, but the girl managed to escape.
The police claim that they do take action about such complaints. But they are quick to add that cases of aspiring policemen teasing young girls are being registered for the first time.
The Delhi High Court is slated to take up the case for hearing on September 24.
