The Election Commission on Thursday sought a report from the Cabinet secretary on the Union Cabinet's decision to constitute a panel to examine reservation for backwards among religious and linguistic minorities.

The Cabinet secretary was asked to submit the report by October 4.

The action came after a Bharatiya Janata Party delegation met the EC and urged it to "initiate corrective action" against "violation" of the model code of conduct, which came into force after the announcement of the schedule for the assembly polls to Maharashtra and Arunachal Pradesh and by-polls to a number of Lok Sabha and assembly constituencies.

After submitting a memorandum to the EC, BJP leaders V K Malhotra and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that the timing of the Cabinet decision and the consequent policy announcement was a "calculated move" by the government to woo the minorities during the polls.
